Tom, never let the law stand in the way of a good time. Dec. 13th, 2009 @ 04:43 pm

I'm not entirely certain what's up with my social meter lately, but I do continue to think a movie marathon would be enjoyable. Scheduling-wise, no evenings this week save possibly Thursday and possibly Friday work at all, and both of those have potential conflicts. A daytime marathon works for many people any day save Wednesday, but not all, and not everyone who was specifically interested in the Jet Li marathon, which got the most positive responses, followed by 80s night.

So assuming Jet Li, what are people's opinions of Thursday and Friday night? I'm a little wary of both, but in theory either is doable. Assuming you'd prefer not Jet Li, do you like those dates or would you prefer during the day some time? So far it seems like either everyone who wanted to see Jet Li will be able to make one time this week, or that will be postponed until a more convenient time and the movies this week will vary depending on who actually can make it. If that makes sense.

Mostly at this point I want to bake lots of chocolate and sit in my eventually cleaned living room with people I like making stupid commentary. And knowing the people I like, that desire could be filled with almost any DVD I pick up.

... Hey! We could all watch Teeth!

No?

Even if I bake cookies?

What about a cake?

Oh, all right. We can vote for movies I don't already own, then.

Although now that I think about it I own more movies than I did a few months ago and haven't watched them. I should figure out what those are.

First off, that's axiomatically wrong, because the best pudding is chocolate. Dec. 11th, 2009 @ 02:02 pm

My final projects are (basically) completed and my plans for the next day and a half have all been canceled. At first I was somewhat at a loss for what to do, and then I realized. I can finally clean. So after work this afternoon I'm going to head home and commence the purge. I'll start my laundry, take the trash out, scour the bathroom, scrub the kitchen.... I might even get around to unpacking the two boxes I have to climb over to get to bed. Or I could finish building my bookshelf and actually remove some of my books from their boxes. But that's going overboard, I probably won't get that far today. If anyone's planning on going to the grocery anytime soon, the only thing better then a clean suite is a clean suite filled with food.

Well, that and a clean suite filled with food, movies and a few people. Given my suddenly flexible schedule and the fact that aside from gleefully tidying my living space I have nothing to do save read, write, watch tv shows, and post to forums, I'm considering having one of those movie nights I always talk about but never plan. I'm only here for another week, and next weekend's going to be spent mostly out of state, but would anyone be interested in a short notice evening of movie goodness? Possibly potluck, possibly ordering food, almost certainly with baked goods involved unless I don't get to the grocery in time. The main problem with this plan is that it's by necessity not a party. I don't have the space for too many people.

I'd start a poll, but I hate building LJ polls. So comment if you'd be interested, when you'd be interested (day of the week and day vs. evening, my schedule's more flexible than most), and what kind of marathon you'd be interested in. ... Also whether or not you have a car with which I could head to the movie store, since that might be necessary for some of these. Possible movie marathons include but are not limited to:

- Disney (will need to be narrowed down)
- Vampires (currently incomplete, as one of the movies involved only exists on VHS and I don't own it)
- Treasure Island (short, since I only know of three movies rather than the standard four)
- Werewolves (it's been done, but dammit we didn't get to see Rise of the Lycans)
- Film Noir (I have my preferences, but the only one that absolutely needs to be in this list is Brick)
- 80s kids/teen movies (Because I've encountered too many people who haven't seen some classics)

If people have lists of three to four movies that fit some other theme, (and particularly if they own them), I'd be up for adding cheesy sci-fi, rampant destruction, thrillers, or really anything to the mix. Those just happen to be the ones I already have mostly narrowed down.

In Which I Change A Lightbulb, and Wonder About Gender Roles Dec. 8th, 2009 @ 03:22 pm
[info]debka_notion
The living room light went out as I turned it on. So I grabbed another bulb (after finding out where we had some from the available roommate), and changed the bulb. Not a big deal, except that the last 3 years, I lived in a set of rooms where the ceilings were too high to actually change my own ceiling lights, as I did not own a ladder. (Lamps were a different story.)

I acquired a copy of the new edition of Va'ani Tefilati (the Masorti movement's siddur) today, as they arranged a very nicely priced sale of them at Schechter (less than half the usual price, a very nice thing for us student types). It's hard cover, has all your basic things that one wants in a prayer book, and a nice font. I'll probably stick with my Koren for most things, as that has Sefer Tehillim (the book of Psalms) in it as well as all the stuff that they share, but it's definitely something that I'm enjoying having.

I stayed after school to do homework, today, then walked to the Conservative Yeshiva to do some trope teaching (week 2, and my student is doing pretty well. It's a totally new thing for him, so mostly we did a bunch of practicing, but it's going increasingly well. Darga and tevir seem to be good trope for him, he's caught on to them very quickly, faster than the others. There's something very friendly about that set of trope, somehow, in my mind. Go figure.), and from there walked home with [info]wotyfree. It's been a very [info]wotyfree-full week, which I'm enjoying. We spent some time talking about gender roles and the performance of gender (not that we used the latter term, I don't think, but it's basically what it was). I've been talking about such things with one of the roommates as well. I like differentiated gender roles in social interactions, myself (within reason, of course), and therefore when people use them or respond to my gendered behavior, I tend to reinforce such things positively. It's what I prefer, after all. But at the same time, it makes things more difficult for people who prefer a less gender-differentiated social experience. I'm uncertain as to how to balance between what I like and think is generally beneficial, and what other individuals might prefer and think is ideal.

It is now somewhat later than I thought that it was. Off to bed goeth I.

Another School Day Dec. 6th, 2009 @ 02:56 pm
[info]debka_notion
Today was, I suppose, just another school day, made a bit different by being quite tired (I was out late last night, having gone out to dinner after shabbos with a bunch of friends, most of whom were folks I had had shabbos lunch with, and then come home and checked email and therefore not gotten to bed until well after my bedtime), and by the fact that I have a test tomorrow in halakha. I did some studying today, and have a good chunk of tomorrow to study before the test. So hopefully it will go alright, although the level of detail that the teacher wants is Quite unclear. I guess we'll just have to see how that goes.

Other than that, one of my two Talmud chevrutas didn't show up today until after lunch (and Talmud is what we have all morning- preparation and then class). Apparently he didn't wake up until 11:30 this morning, so I gather that he went to the doctor this afternoon, or is going to do so. So we worried over him some, and otherwise the other two of us did our work. I do hope he figures out whatever is going on for him- it doesn't sound like a lot of fun.

Other than that, I came home and spent a bunch of time tonight on Skype with [info]jakal88, and then my parents. I missed talking to them last week due to poor scheduling and poor hearing of beeping computers, so this week it was quite good to actually catch each other.

In the past week, I've been dealing with a small mountain of end of the semester classwork. Seriously, it may be more work (or at least equal) than I had to do for all the rest of this semester. I like to think I'm making up for any slacking off, at least. (and perhaps then some). And really it's not going to be over until next Friday, when I'll have finished both finals as well. Though I'll defintely feel at least a little better once this last essay is done. I feel like I'm in the final stretch at least! Detailed 5-page outline with all the quotes I plan on using from... Well, two of seven or eight sources, but at least they're two of my primary sources. I think. I'm still a little worried about getting it done on time. Due in part to getting assignments late and thus being time crunched, I'm not sure I've ever had to do this much writing in so short a time.

One nice thing about it, though. I may be kind of stressed (though not as bad as I could be), and physically and mentally worn out, but I'm actually getting it all DONE. Even with picking up a bunch of box office hours, I've been steadily slogging through it all, and have already turned in two of three assignments on time. I've been spending easily the vast majority of my time, maybe 75-80% a day, just working on this stuff, and being really productive. For someone with a major history of motivational problems in regards to school work, especially when it piles up like this, it's been a huge accomplishment. I hope it shows in the quality of my work, to. In fact, other than that one quiz I did pretty awfully on (passed at least, but not by much), I think I've done pretty well on all my assignments this semester, and passed every one in on time. This is a notable improvement, and a trend I hope I can continue. :)

On a slightly more frivolous note, I recently got myelf an iPod touch (as a sort of early Christmas/birthday present to myself). I haven't regretted it for a minute - this thing is really awesome and really handy to have, and I've found it to be actively quite useful on multiple occasions. On top of that, it's by far the nicest mp3 player I've ever owned, and I like the organizational capabilities quite a lot.

It's possible other major things have occured in my life recently, but if so, i'm not remebering them. Which may be a sign that there haven't been, but can never be totally sure.

Texas Tenant Law Questions Dec. 4th, 2009 @ 08:31 pm
[info]bleemoo

I’ve got some friends who are living in Texas right now, and are concerned enough about their personal safety that they’re considering breaking their lease. I also have a bunch of lawyer friends, and my friends have other friends who are also lawyers. Any of you know Texas law pretty well and would be willing to do a favor for someone in a tricky situation? Comment here and I’ll put you directly in touch with them. Thanks.
